DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAMME

The Associate Certificate programme is a two – semester course in Nautical Science and Marine Engineering; it comprises Associate Certificate in Nautical Science (ACNS) and Associate Certificate in Marine Engineering (ACME). The programme is an alternative route for individuals desiring to build a career at sea as merchant – navy officers but are not able to follow the National Diploma route due to age restriction or other reasons. It also provides a bridge for individuals who are already diplomates or graduates in other fields of study who now want to cross over to the seafaring profession because of its lucrative nature and availability of jobs in the maritime industry.

TARGET AUDIENCE

Anyone who is interested in the sea – fairing career or profession other than those who have already gone through the National Diploma Programmes in Marine Engineering or Nautical Science, is eligible to apply.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Candidates for the Associate Certificate programmes in Nautical Science and Marine Engineering must:

  1. – Possess a minimum qualification of WAEC/NECO/NABTEB or GCE O’level certificate 

  with credit passes in five (5) subjects, including English Language, Mathematics, Physics 

  and any other two (2) science subjects,  OR 

      –  National Diploma or Bachelors degree in any science related programme.

(b)    Not be less than 18 years of age.  There is no upper age limit.

(c)    Be physically, mentally and medically fit.

CAREER PROGRESSION AND PROSPECTS

Candidates who successfully complete the Associate Certificate programmes will be awarded Associate Certificate in Nautical Science (ACNS) or Associate Certificate in Marine Engineering (ACME), endorsed by the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA). The candidate will be eligible to proceed to the sea – going phase for practical sea service as required by the NIMASA.  On successful completion of the – sea service period, candidates will be eligible to participate in the Certificate of Competency Preparatory classes and consequently sit for the qualifying examination which leads to the award of Officer – in – Charge of a Watch 

(O. O. W.) Certificate.

With the OOW Certificate the candidate is qualified to work onboard ships of different types, sizes and nationalities and in any part of the World as a Watch – keeping Officer.  With further college education sandwiched between sea – services, the candidate will eventually qualify to become a ship Captain or marine Chief Engineer.

METHOD OF APPLICATION:

Candidates should visit the Charkin Maritime Academy main Campus at Km 4, East – West road, Ozuoba, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, and fill the application Form.  Candidates who are unable to visit the Academy Campus may have the Form sent to them by email for processing.  Successful Candidates will be notified within a week of Form submission.

Application Fee is NGN10,000.00 only.

DATE OF RESUMPTION

Academic activities for the first Batch of Associate students in the Charkin Maritime Academy will commence on the Monday 11th November 2024.
