Charkin Maritime Academy, is a maritime education and training institution of higher learning in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria. It was established in 2016 by Sir (Dr.) Charles K. Wami out of a burning desire and passion to develop manpower for the Nigerian maritime industry and at the same time assist in bridging the gap in unmet demand for the admission of young Nigerian school leavers into higher institutions of learning in Nigeria.
The Academy was carved out of the prestigious and award winning nationally and internationally accredited Charkin Maritime and Offshore Safety Centre (CMOSC), Port Harcourt. Consequently it inherited some of the staff and facilities of CMOSC which also became its take – off site and main campus. Charkin Maritime Academy is located on 5.1 hectares of land in Ozuoba village in Obio / Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State, four kilometres from Port Harcourt city centre. Although the process of establishing the Institution started in June 2016, it was not until October 2020 that the School was accredited by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) to run two National Diploma programmes, namely; Nautical Science and Marine Engineering.
In the Academic Master Plan of the Academy there are plans to mount National Diploma in Marine Electrical/Electronic Technology (MEET) programme and to upgrade the two existing programmes to Higher National Diploma as soon as the National Diploma programmes are consolidated.
Academic activities commenced in the Academy on 30th May 2021 with 32 merchant – navy – cadets. Currently the school runs two programmes, National Diploma in Nautical Science and Marine Engineering, successful completion of each of which leads to the award of National Diploma in Nautical Science or Marine Engineering in the first instance as the case may be. Subsequently, the programmes provide the basis for the Cadet to go on board the ship for the Phase II twelve (12) months mandatory sea – experience and be eligible to take part in the Certificate of Competency Preparatory programme and qualifying examinations. The Academy is also approved by the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) to offer professional programmes known as “Officer – in – Charge of a Watch” for Deck Cadets and Engineering Cadets who have completed their two year National Diploma programmes and the 12 months sea time.
