The Academy’s curricula are well – articulated and up – to – date and meet both national and international standards.  Our academic programmes are designed to lead to the award of National Diploma in Nautical Science and Marine Engineering, as well as water the ground for the cadets phase II mandatory (twelve) 12 months sea – experience scheme

With the facilities on ground in the Academy, coupled with an unbeatable faculty we are able to equip our cadets and students with the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities that will make them stand out in the global world of work.

Academy’s campus is free of cultism, indiscipline and general deviant behaviours most commonly found amongst students. The institution is regimented and as such there are no such things as sale of handouts, sex or money for marks, bullying or other forms of cruelty by students or staff. The results of all these is that the campus remains calm, peaceful and conducive for knowledge transfer and skills acquisition at all times.

Our History

Charkin Maritime Academy, Port Harcourt, (popularly called the “Academy”) was established in June 2016 by Sir (Dr) Charles K. Wami. The idea and urge to establish the Academy came as a result of his burning desire to assist in developing manpower for the Nigerian maritime industry,to stem the acute manpower shortage that has plagued it since the demise of the Nigerian National Shipping Lines Limited. At the same time the Founder wanted an Institution that will contribute in bridging the gap of unmet demands for admission in higher institutions in Nigeria, especially in the maritime education and training Sector.

The Campus where the Charkin Maritime Academy is located belongs to the Charkin Maritime and Offshore Safety Centre (CMOSC) also owned and operated by Sir (Dr) Charles Wami. Accordingly at inception, the Academy inherited some of the facilities and staff of the CMOSC. She has since expanded her frontiers by building additional facilities of her own, including the Marine engineering laboratories and workshops Complex; 200 – bed capacity Cadets’ hostel; Seamanship workshop; Meteorology and navigational aids laboratory; modern Library incorporating an e – library section and modern classrooms equipped with PowerPoint projectors, to name but a few., The Academy has in a short time developed into a citadel of learning, where world – class maritime education and training has been brought to the learner’s doorstep.

She is located in Latitude 4° 53´.2 and Longitude 6° 55´.1 on 5.1 hectares of land in Ozuoba village of Obio / Akpor Local Government Area, about four kilometres from Port Harcourt city centre in Rivers State. She runs two academic programmes presently, namely: National Diploma in Nautical Science and National Diploma in Marine Engineering. In addition the Academy also runs professional Certificate of Competency (CoC) programmes, which are: Officer in Charge of a Navigational Watch (OOW) NCV and Unlimited and Officer in Charge of an Engineering Watch (OOW) NCV and Unlimited. The institution is easily accessible by road and by air from any part of Nigeria and only about 15 minutes’ drive from Port Harcourt international Airport.

Although a new and fledging maritime institution, the Academy has already become popular, as nothing is spared in providing quality and competitive maritime education and training to our merchant – navy cadets and maritime industry practitioners. Perhaps, one of the greatest strives she has recorded is her collaboration with a European shipping company to provide ship – berths for our Cadets on completion of their National Diploma programmes, to eliminate any
interruption in their merchant navy career. Furthermore our Cadets have the singular opportunity of being given automatic employment by the European shipping company that is supporting our training efforts.

Research

CMA Partnership

Charkin Maritime Academy is partnering with Bernhard Shulte Ship Management (BSM) of Europe to place 60 CMA cadets on board foreign ships going every year for the mandatory 12 months sea service, and to give automatic employment to those that will do well. Since the demise of the Nigerian National Shipping Lines Ltd it has not been heard that any Maritime institution is able to provide shipping berths for her cadets to carry out the mandatory seatime. This feat makes it possible for Charkin Maritime Academy Cadets to continue their training without break, as a result of lack of ship berth for the sea – time after their two year National Diploma programmes.

Philosophy

Our Philosophy

Charkin Maritime Academy emphasizes both academic and professional attainment as well as character development, that is, students are encouraged to seek honour as well as achievement. The Academy has an open and non – tribal admission policy and is focused on educational excellence and achievement of equity among the various populations served. The programmes are intended to impart both theoretical knowledge and practical skills to students in their relevant fields to provide a strong foundation for them to build their career at sea and work in any modern, sophisticated organization within the global marine transportation and offshore industry.

I heartily welcome you on board as you chart your own course

I welcome you to a world - class maritime education and training!!

Life on Campus

Social Life

To cater for total human development, the cadets training in regimentation and academics are spiced with social, cultural and religious activities.  The Cadets Smoke room and Welfare shop provide facilities where cadets can unwind, play indoor games, watch television, organize and hold social and cultural events, among others.  The cadets take part in a swimming exercise as much as possible every Saturday as part of their extra – curricula activities. The Social life on campus is not limited to the cadets and the students alone, the staff and the entire Academy community are united as one big family within the Charkin Centre where the institution’s campus is located. The “Happy Hour” also provides an avenue for both staff, cadets and students to meet, interact and exchange ideas from time to time.

Religious Life

In the Charkin Maritime Academy Campus there are places of worship for the adherents of the two dominant religious communities.  These are Christians and Muslims, who co – exist peacefully in the Academy.  The Christian and Muslim religious communities have been of immense benefit to the Charkin Maritime Academy: their inspirational teachings have instilled great moral and spiritual values on cadets, students, staff and the Charkin community in general.  They play important roles during the Passing – Out – Parade (P. O. P.); according to Academy’s Academic Calendar, Special Jumat and Christian religious services are always held in the week preceding the P. O. P. programme.  On this occasion religious personalities are invited to the school to offer inspirational teachings and prayers.  All these activities go a long way in making the Academy and the Charkin Centre a place to be.  They help in reducing stress amongst staff, cadets and students and also enhance unity and progress in the entire Charkin Centre.

Medicals

The Academy uses the Charkin Maritime and Offshore Safety Centre medical facilities comprising a Sick Bay on Campus and retainer hospitals for serious medical cases. The Sick Bay is manned by three registered Nigerian Nurses who are able to handle all minor and emergency cases before referring them to the retainer hospitals where necessary. The Sick Bay is well equipped with drugs purchased with a revolving loan provided by the Centre’s Management. Cadets are treated free of charge for all ailments up to a certain fixed amount.

Cadet's Affairs Unit

The Cadets’ Affairs Unit is under the charge of an Assistant Registrar who reports to the Registrar of the Academy. The Unit handles all matters concerning the cadets, including registration, scholarship, transcripts, documentation, grants, insurance, guidance and counselling and academic welfare. It works in liaison with the Regimental Unit to maintain cadets discipline, general welfare and health; and with the SIWES Department to ensure that the cadets SIWES is always successfully executed.
